eLecture mit Prof. Dr. Ellis Tinios (Visiting researcher, Art Research Center, Ritsumeikan University)

In this talk I will explore the linguistic, technological and economic factors that determined the appearance of text on the printed page in early modern Japan. A number of large, interrelated questions will be addressed. How did publishers cater to the needs of readers who possessed a wide range of ‘literacies? Why did the industry opt for printing blocks rather than moveable type? To what extent did genre determine the appearance of the printed page? What strategies did publishers employ to achieve the widest possible distribution of books?
